Indonesian Jazz Ambassador perform in Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Johannesburg 26-28 September 2019
For the first time Indonesian jazz Ambassador Dwiki Dharmawan performed and amazed South African Public in “22ndStandard Bank Joy of Jazz” Johannesburg, South Africa from 26-28 September 2019. Indonesian jazz delegation consisting of Dwiki Dharmawan (accoustic piano and synthesizer), Cucu Kurnia (Sundanese percussion), Rudy Zulkarnain (Accoustic and Electric Bass), Ita Purnamasari (Vocal) teamed up with South African Saxophonist Sisonke Xonti in Sandton Convention Centre.
SBJOJ which presented 350 Artist from South Africa and the world is known as the oldest Jazz Festival in South Africa. The Festival of “Live the Music – Jazz Unleashed” staged world class jazz stars such as Wynton Marsalis (USA), Manu Katché (France), Etuk Ebong (Nigeria). In SBJOJ Dwiki Dharmawan who has performed in more than 70 countries and was recently awarded Gold Medal for Creativty 2019 from WIPO presented his music repertoire from his albums “So Far So Close”, “Pasar Klewer”, “Rumah Batu” and his new album “Hari Ketiga”. In every overseas performance, Dwiki Dharmawan always includes Indonesian ethnic traditional music to introduce the richness of Indonesian arts and culture. In 22nd SBJOJ, Dwiki Dharmawan team with costumes from North Sumatra and Javanese Batik, incorporate Sundanese traditional percussion instrument (Kendang) in his South Africa Show.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia for the Republic of South Africa, Salman Al Farisi stated that the 2019 marked the 25 year of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and South Africa. Therefore the participation of Indonesian jazz musician, Dwiki Dharmawan who mix Sundanese traditional music, with jazz collaborated with South African artist simbolised the harmony of Indonesian South Africa relations which supported and inspired each other.
According to Dwiki Dharmawan, his presence in world music festival like SBJOJ shall not only show the existence of Indonesian achievement in Jazz but also to celebrate love, peace and tolerance through jazz and cultural diplomacy. This is the time for Indonesia–a country abundant of Jazz Genious—to show their existence in grand world jazz festivals as to promote Indonesian culture and tourism including South Africa.
